This module introduces learners to three topics of Business Studies, as outlined in the CAPS curriculum for Grade 10. It focuses on developing learners' understanding of how businesses operate within society, respond to current socio-economic challenges, and function across different sectors of the economy. The module is structured into three core topics:
-
Social Responsibility
Learners explore the role of businesses in promoting social and environmental well-being. This includes understanding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Corporate Social Investment (CSI), their benefits to both business and society, and the practical ways companies support their communities. -
Contemporary Socio-Economic Issues
This section examines current issues affecting businesses in South Africa, such as unemployment, poverty, crime, HIV/AIDS, load shedding, strikes, and inequality. Learners will analyse how these challenges impact business operations and develop ideas on how businesses can respond ethically and strategically. -
Business Sectors
Learners are introduced to the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors of the economy. They will learn how these sectors are interdependent and identify real-life examples of businesses operating within each sector. This helps them understand the structure of the South African economy and where different types of businesses fit in.
Throughout the module, learners engage in activities that promote critical thinking, collaboration, and real-life application of business principles. They will complete case studies, participate in discussions, and reflect on their role in the business world. The module concludes with an integrated project that allows learners to apply knowledge from all three topics in a meaningful and practical way.
By the end of this module, learners will have developed a foundational understanding of how businesses contribute to society, navigate challenges, and operate within the economic landscape — preparing them for more advanced topics in Grades 11 and 12.
